As we head into the autumn months there’s never been a better time to consider a gutter clean, repair or replacement if you suspect your guttering isn’t performing as well as it should. Routine maintenance will help to improve the effectiveness of your guttering system which can become clogged, defective or underperforming during its lifetime.
Whether you have badly designed Finlock Guttering or new soffits, PVC fascia boards and plastic downpipes, you really should have your guttering cleaned at least once a year, especially as you head into the winter months.
Fail to do this and you will create unnecessary problems which could lead to expensive and unplanned expenditure in the future. Something you really could do without.
Have you ever wondered why it’s important to have your guttering cleaned or replaced? If the answer is yes, or you simply haven’t considered this for quite a while, let us explain the importance of effective gutter maintenance at Finlock Gutter.
What happens to gutters if you fail to maintain them?
Fail to clean your gutters regularly and they can become prone to blockages which in turn can lead to damage and longer term problems. Over the course of time, many obstacles can create blockages in gutters and downpipes such as rotting leaves, moss and debris dropped by birds, or deposited by the wind. Left untreated, these items can accumulate and a gradual build-up of debris can lead to blockages.
Objects that block gutters and downpipes include:
• Wet and dry leaves
• Moss, algae, twigs and small branches
• Litter caught in the wind
• Items dropped by birds
• Dead animals
Any or all of these contributing factors could create a blockage or at the very least, limit the performance of your guttering system. Left untreated, the debris builds month after month until you start having problems.
How do you know when there’s a guttering problem?
Visual inspections of gutters can be difficult from ground level. Unless you are confident using ladders or have some other means of checking the condition of the guttering, you will be reliant on the physical performance of the system. You’ll know when you have blocked gutters. Take a look outside when it’s raining heavily and if you spot water overflowing from the guttering, running down the side of your house, you know there’s a blockage that needs looking at. In this case, you can either clear the gutters yourself or call for expert help.
What if you leave the gutters as they are?
We wouldn’t recommend this at Finlock Gutter. Left untreated and you will only be placing undue pressure on the guttering system. This can cause sagging on gutters, which can sometimes be noticeable from ground level. There’s also the danger of damp penetrating the outer walls of the property, due to rainwater not being able to drain away properly. In severe cases, the extra weight created due to a build-up of debris can lead to issues with joints, support brackets and gutter seams. If you leave blocked gutters untreated this can lead to extensive and expensive repairs after a while. All of which is preventable.
Is there a solution which prevents this?
Keep gutters, fascias and soffits in good condition by checking them regularly and maintain them at least once a year. The best time to do this is during autumn prior to winter, just after the leaves have fallen from the trees. If you have old concrete gutters, you could have them replaced with high-quality uPVC gutters which are so much easier to maintain and cause fewer problems.
